An Unconventional Metroid Experience

My one brief experience with Metroid growing up was on a plane with an entertainment system that included Game Boy games. But Samus’s world has always intrigued me. And the buzz around Metroid Dread not too long ago led me to a unique Metroid game that few fans have heard of: "Metroid: Zebes Invasion Order". The catch? It’s not a video game, but a book!

Think of it as a “choose your own adventure” book with tabletop RPG elements mixed in to simulate combat. It also came out between the release of the very first Metroid and its sequel, so a lot of the book’s visuals are radically different from the iconic imagery Metroid is known for. It’s all very surreal...in an alternate world, maybe Metroid games looked more like it.

To play the book, you don’t actually need to own it — the people over at Metroid Database have digitized it so it’s playable online! It's called "Twinetroid", and can be played here. I didn’t have the patience to play through the whole thing, but if you give it a shot, who knows? You might make it to the end of the mission.
