Stopping My Chase For The "Next" Thing

So…the King of Fighters XV beta happened on the weekend. Normally I would’ve been on top of things and played it, but I passed on the opportunity. That’s partly because I’m kinda tired of looking forward to trying the newest fighting games + the newest thing in “current” games.

I’ve talked a little about this before, but hype isn’t enough to sustain my interest, and the games I’ve been trying haven’t been able to keep me past the hype. Nor is playing with others online. Yeah, I know that’s antithetical to a large part of what fighting games are about (1v1 gameplay between 2 people)…but it just ain’t satisfying me long-term.

I think about a character like Street Fighter’s Ryu, who isn’t constantly fighting others. A lot of the time, he’s going off into some forest by himself to meditate or train instead. But those secluded periods are just as crucial to his growth. In that sense, I’m changing my approach — maybe playing old/“dead” games solo will give me something I’ve been missing. For now, I’ll be messing around with Dead or Alive 5’s tutorial 🤔
